Yet, due to deforestation, habitat destruction, climate change, and hunting, many species are endangered. It is included in the endangered animals list as the extent of its occurrence is less than 5,000 km². Unfortunately there are a number of endangered animals in the amazon rainforest.

While rarely spotted in the northern amazon, giant otters are one of the commonly encountered animals of the amazonian rainforest. A lot of these will be within the amazon rainforest, but will also live in the highly threatened atlantic forest and temperate forests in chile. They can be located swimming along the mangrove trees.
